Five scenic stages worth the drive

Not every great rally road is part of a championship. Here are five stretches we think every enthusiast should drive, calmly and within the limit, at least once.

First, a forest stage in northern Scandinavia, where long, flowing sections of fine gravel snake between pine trees. Late summer is the perfect time: dry, quiet and full of light.

Second, a coastal tarmac route in southern Europe, with tight hairpins above the sea and little traffic outside the tourist season. Stop at the viewpoints and look back along the road you just drove.

Third, a high mountain pass in the Alps, famous for its switchbacks and for the effort it takes to get there. Drive it early in the morning, before cyclists and coaches arrive.

Fourth, a classic island circuit with narrow, hedge-lined lanes and rapidly changing surface. It is a lesson in precision, and a reminder of why some drivers swear by small, light cars.

Fifth, an open desert track where the horizon seems endless. Carry plenty of water, a spare wheel and a way to call for help. The scenery is worth it.
